"Get It The Way You Want It"

Instrumentation: Ableton Live

I spent a lot of my project energy this past week obsessing over the song "Tinnitus," from the previous week. I remixed it three times, and finally posted an aside to Facebook about it. And Tracy Broyles suggested that I get it the way I want it, hence the title of this week's song.

The genesis for this week's song came from a demo I did for a client. The song wasn't selected for their project, so I kept listening to it and thinking I would love to work it up for this week.

The songs is entirely created using Ableton Live instruments. I was planning a whole live guitar rave-up to go over the drums and bass, including a super distorted EBow part, backwards guitars, and lots of noise and grit - but kept returning to the clean, almost bloodless feeling of the synths. Something about the control and clean shiny surfaces implied by the sounds resonated with me this week.

Maybe it's the feeling of control amid the chaos, so I can truly get it the way I want it. That's what this song is about for me. Nothing falls apart, everything is moving the way it should - and even though I usually like a little more mess in my music, I also enjoy how beautiful mechanics can be.

Oddly enough, I actually replaced the first version of "Tinnitus" last week with one of the remixes I did, and I'm not sure I like it as much because it feels TOO controlled - the messy dynamics and off kilter melodic movement of the original version felt better. So that's the flipside of this equation. Make of that what you will! And see you next week.
